About

Karen Howell owner of Blue color Bookkeeper

As a Florida and Lee County native, I've seen this place grow so much! There are now communities where I learned to drive.  The family business, alongside my "Grammy", is where I got my start in bookkeeping. We worked with different types of construction and contractor-related businesses. Seeing the faces of the workers and getting to know the business owners reminded us they weren’t just names on the paperwork. Getting to know the "people in my neighborhood" and their stories AND their families made the services we provided more personal. It was a business, but we were in regular contact with the owners, their families, and their employees. We got to hear their stories of what was going on in their lives and their businesses. Looking back, it seemed so ... Mayberry.  Having that connection and interacting with the WHO behind the businesses meant so much.

I do what I do because … I watched my immediate family working long hours at the business, wearing so many hats and it's tiring. As business owners, we are forced to do all the things ourselves and it can feel pretty lonely at times.  It can also be extremely frustrating when you've invested your personal time working on an aspect of your business that isn't your strong point, only to have a higher quality of work done in a fraction of the time by someone who is an expert in their field.  I've experienced this firsthand in my own business.  Besides, bookkeeping is what I'd be doing "if I wasn't doin' this".  I can help you by taking over your monthly bookkeeping, providing financial reports that you can actually read and understand, organizing your documents and receipts, and train you how to use QuickBooks more effectively and efficiently if you want to do your own books.

Before starting my own business I've worked in mostly administrative, bookkeeping and finance roles for the last 30 years and with various types of businesses from an Optometrists office to a hotel. My favorite businesses are construction contractors. They are usually hard-working, personable, and give you the shirt off their back kinda people. These are my peeps.

The best part of what I do is taking a QB file that is simply a "hot mess" and turning it into a clear, concise, organized file with financials that can now tell the story of the business. The organization is rewarding, but it's also being the breath of fresh air for that business owner who has felt lost and overwhelmed for so long and now they have the information they can use to take action.

My family I've been married for 20+ years to a handsome guy with strong southern qualities, who puts up with my special kind of crazy, and my need for detail. We have 3 teens that are each growing into independent young adults and finding their way in this world. (They also have a keen ability to unknowingly mirror back to me some of my less likable qualities.)
